Better than any drug that gets you high



On the invitation of TM Khalid, our respected member and Vice President Public Relations, Professionals Toastmasters club organised its meeting at the office of Genesis Solutions (Pvt) Ltd on October 13th, 2011. The meeting was scheduled to start at 6: 45 p.m.

Our Sergeant-at-Arms, Madam TM Neel called the meeting in order and observed the pledge. Madam TM Dr. Avan was the Presiding officer of the meeting. Toastmaster was TM Maneckji, Topicmaster was TM Shahrukh and TM Adnan was the General Evaluator. TM Adnan beautifully said that duties are your horses and you have to lead them because when horses are running very fast then they will hoof and I want you to make your horses hoof. The theme of our meeting was “the Pacific Settlement of Disputes.”

The team of General Evaluator included TM Tahir as the Table Topics Evaluator, TM Farid as the Timer, TM Neel as the Vote Counter, TM Aqeel as the Grammarian, TM Jaan as the Ah-Counter and TM Haris as the Word-Master. Word of the day was Nostalgia. TM Maneckji was the Speech Evaluator for TM Panjwani and TM Farid was the Speech Evaluator for Madam TM Neel.

In Table Topics session, topics were related to the theme. TM Ibad was assigned to speak on Negotiations. He was asked to negotiate and convince himself not to eat much and exercise more. TM Tahir was assigned to speak on Arbitration. He was asked to settle a dispute on TV remote between his children. TM Jaan was assigned Inquiry. He was asked to inquire about one of his coworker in his radio company. TM Farid was assigned Mediation. He was asked to mediate between his friend and his friend’s girlfriend who were about to breakup. Madam Aliya, a visually impaired child, was assigned Good offices. She was asked to pick a good place in order for her friends, who were fighting, to patch up in a good and healthy environment. Hammad was asked to speak on how he will get his friends back together after a fight.

In the Prepared Speeches session, two speeches were delivered. TM Panjwani delivered his Project 3, the Persuasive Approach, from the Advance Communication Series. The title of his speech was “Presidential Election Speech.” He introduced his political party’s five years plan. The name of his party was the Democratic Party and its symbol was Aeroplane. He promised us to curb the electricity problem by building 20 dams in five years, to control inflation, take measures to control the law and order situation of Karachi, to work on business security and tourism and on the issue of balance of payments. He quoted to us the examples of Bangladesh and East Africa. He concluded his speech by saying that he and his party were sharing their plans and vision with you.

The second Speech was delivered by Madam TM Neel. She presented her second project from the Competent Communicator manual. The Title of her speech was, “her doll Cindy found her real home.” She shared with us the story of how she would hold her father’s hand whenever she was in the hospital to avoid pain. One day, when her father wasn’t there so she got mad and her father bought her a doll, Cindy. She didn’t know how to play with dolls but created a bond after having it for 17 years. She recently visited an orphanage which was only for boys and found one orphan girl over there. She did not have anything then to give her. So, she decided to give her that doll. She ended her speech by saying that happiness and joy might right be around the corner and in order to grab it, we might end up giving up our precious things.” She also said that the feeling of satisfaction is better than any drug that gets you high.

In the Evaluation session, TM Adnan said that evaluation is the life of communication and communication is the life.

Winner of Table Topics was TM Hammad and TM Jaan was the runner-up. Winner for the Prepared Speeches was Madam TM Neel and TM Panjwani was the runner-up.

Our next meeting will be at Beach Luxury hotel.
