Better than any drug that gets you high



On the invitation of TM Khalid, our respected member and Vice President Public Relations, Professionals Toastmasters club organised its meeting at the office of Genesis Solutions (Pvt) Ltd on October 13th, 2011. The meeting was scheduled to start at 6: 45 p.m.

Our Sergeant-at-Arms, Madam TM Neel called the meeting in order and observed the pledge. Madam TM Dr. Avan was the Presiding officer of the meeting. Toastmaster was TM Maneckji, Topicmaster was TM Shahrukh and TM Adnan was the General Evaluator. TM Adnan beautifully said that duties are your horses and you have to lead them because when horses are running very fast then they will hoof and I want you to make your horses hoof. The theme of our meeting was “the Pacific Settlement of Disputes.”

The team of General Evaluator included TM Tahir as the Table Topics Evaluator, TM Farid as the Timer, TM Neel as the Vote Counter, TM Aqeel as the Grammarian, TM Jaan as the Ah-Counter and TM Haris as the Word-Master. Word of the day was Nostalgia. TM Maneckji was the Speech Evaluator for TM Panjwani and TM Farid was the Speech Evaluator for Madam TM Neel.

In Table Topics session, topics were related to the theme. TM Ibad was assigned to speak on Negotiations. He was asked to negotiate and convince himself not to eat much and exercise more. TM Tahir was assigned to speak on Arbitration. He was asked to settle a dispute on TV remote between his children. TM Jaan was assigned Inquiry. He was asked to inquire about one of his coworker in his radio company. TM Farid was assigned Mediation. He was asked to mediate between his friend and his friend’s girlfriend who were about to breakup. Madam Aliya, a visually impaired child, was assigned Good offices. She was asked to pick a good place in order for her friends, who were fighting, to patch up in a good and healthy environment. Hammad was asked to speak on how he will get his friends back together after a fight.

In the Prepared Speeches session, two speeches were delivered. TM Panjwani delivered his Project 3, the Persuasive Approach, from the Advance Communication Series. The title of his speech was “Presidential Election Speech.” He introduced his political party’s five years plan. The name of his party was the Democratic Party and its symbol was Aeroplane. He promised us to curb the electricity problem by building 20 dams in five years, to control inflation, take measures to control the law and order situation of Karachi, to work on business security and tourism and on the issue of balance of payments. He quoted to us the examples of Bangladesh and East Africa. He concluded his speech by saying that he and his party were sharing their plans and vision with you.

The second Speech was delivered by Madam TM Neel. She presented her second project from the Competent Communicator manual. The Title of her speech was, “her doll Cindy found her real home.” She shared with us the story of how she would hold her father’s hand whenever she was in the hospital to avoid pain. One day, when her father wasn’t there so she got mad and her father bought her a doll, Cindy. She didn’t know how to play with dolls but created a bond after having it for 17 years. She recently visited an orphanage which was only for boys and found one orphan girl over there. She did not have anything then to give her. So, she decided to give her that doll. She ended her speech by saying that happiness and joy might right be around the corner and in order to grab it, we might end up giving up our precious things.” She also said that the feeling of satisfaction is better than any drug that gets you high.

In the Evaluation session, TM Adnan said that evaluation is the life of communication and communication is the life.

Winner of Table Topics was TM Hammad and TM Jaan was the runner-up. Winner for the Prepared Speeches was Madam TM Neel and TM Panjwani was the runner-up.

Our next meeting will be at Beach Luxury hotel.

A busy man has time for everything

We had an amazing meeting on October 6th, 2011 at Beach Luxury. Meeting was presided over by Madam TM Dr. Avan and Madam TM Neel observed the Toastmaster’s pledge. Roles were performed by TM Maneckji as the Toastmaster, TM Tauseef as the Topicmaster and TM Farid as the General Evaluator. Theme of our meeting was the ‘Power of Persuasion.’ TM Adnan also donated our club a banner with new logos of Toastmaster International and Professionals Toastmasters.

Induction ceremony of our newly registered members was held. The newly registered members included TM Khalid, TM Nadym, TM Tahir, TM Adnan, TM Jaan, TM Ibad, TM Neel and TM Panjwani. TM Ibad, TM Nadym and TM Tahir were unable to join us. Madam TM Dr. Avan observed the oath. TM Iqbal Bakshi was asked to present our new members with pins. Our Immediate President, TM Fahim, presented our members with Manuals. And Vice President Education, TM Shahrukh, assigned mentors to our new members.

The team of the General Evaluator included TM Jaan Ali as the Timer, TM Fahim as the Ah-Counter, Madam TM Avan as the Grammarian, TM Neel as the Vote-counter and TM Iqbal Bakshi as the Word-master. Word of the day was ‘Wishful.’ Speech evaluators included TM Panjwani for the speech of TM Khalid and Madam TM Dr. Avan for the speech of TM Adnan.

The core idea that surrounded all the table topics was ‘Persuasion.’ TM Bakshi was asked to persuade the audience as the presidential candidate. TM Panjwani was asked to persuade the audience to join his profession. TM Neel was asked to persuade everyone that books are the best sleeping pills. Madam TM Dr. Avan spoke about day dreaming. TM Shahrukh was asked to highlight good points about a persuasive speech. TM Fahim persuaded to watch football. And TM Jaan was asked to persuade for banning eating and text messaging. Hammad, who is a child with hearing impairment, was asked to introduce himself.

There were two speeches in the prepared speeches session. First speech was delivered by TM Adnan. He presented his Project eight from the Competent Communicator manual. The title of his speech was ‘Think 360.’ He shared with us some tips:

1) Take a good shower daily,

2) Play any sports and do exercise,

3) Manage and decorate your office or room,

4) Nature is the best source of pro-activity,

5) Always try to draw something on your notebook,

6) Make a list of mistakes,

7) Buy gifts for your spouse,

8) Get up early to welcome the sunrise,

9) Visit a gallery or a museum,

10) Notice kids and talk to them and

11) Become MAD

He ended his speech by saying that, ‘a busy man has time for everything.’ He also said that be happy, be curious and think 360.

The second prepared speech was delivered by TM Khalid. He also presented project eight from the Competent Communicator manual. The title of his speech was ‘Traffic Signs.’

His speech was about traffic signs. He started with a humorous line on traffic sign about related to buffaloes. He explained us the history of traffic signs. He told us that there are three categories of traffic signs:

a) Mandatory signs,

b) Warning Signs and

c) Informatory signs.

He ended his speech by saying, “safe drive and stay alive.”

Winner for the Table Topics session was TM Fahim and TM Shahrukh was the runner-up. Winner of the Prepared Speeches session was TM Adnan and TM Khalid was the runner-up.

The venue for our next meeting is not going to be Beach Luxury. The Professionals Toastmaster club is invited by our Vice President Public Relations TM Khalid to hold its meeting at his office. The meeting will start at 6:45 p.m.

our new logo

The meeting date of the Professional Toastmasters club was September 29th, 2011. The theme of the meeting was “On Your Mark, Get Set… Go!” The colour for the meeting was blue and the slogan was confidence. The Presiding officer was Madam TM Dr. Avan. Toastmaster was TM Farid. The General Evaluator was TM Adnan. And Table-Topicsmaster was TM Tauseef. Madam TM Neel started the meeting by observing the oath.

The Toastmaster explained us the concept of Teamwork.

a) T: Together,

b) E: Everybody,

c) A: Accomplishes and

d) M: More.

The Toastmaster also explained the theme “On Your Mark, Get Set… Go!” with certain thoughts:

a) On Your Mark: Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow -- Helen Keller

b) Get Set: Give your attitude some latitude

c) Go: One step at a time

The team of the General Evaluator comprised of TM Tahir as the Timer, TM Nadym as the Grammarian, Madam TM Neel as the Vote Counter, TM Jaan Ali as the Ah-Counter and TM Hairs as the Word-Master. Word of the day was “Aggravate.” This team also included TM Nadym as the Speech Evaluator for TM Maneck and TM Shahrukh as the Speech Evaluator for Madam TM Dr. Avan.

TM Tauseef is our new member and conducted the Table Topics session for the first time. Five speakers participated in the Table Topics session. “What will you ask from a psychic about your future” was the question that every speaker had to answer. TM Nadym, TM Haris, TM Khalid, TM Neel and TM Adnan were asked to speak.

There were two speeches and one presentation in the Prepared Speeches session. First speech was delivered by Madam TM Dr. Avan. She delivered her second project from the Interpersonal Communication manual. The title of her speech was “A Part of Life.” TM Farid helped her in performing the simulation exercise.

The second speech was delivered by TM Maneckji from Humorously Speaking manual. He presented his first project and the title of his speech was “A Love Affair.”

TM Shahrukh presented a Powerpoint presentation for the purpose of educating the members about Competent Communicator manual, Competent Leadership manual, title of Distinguish Toastmaster and Distinguish Club programme. The title of the presentation was “The Grand Goal.” TM Khalid evaluated the presentation.

This opportunity was also used to launch our new logo. The task of designing our new logo and certificates for the best Table Topics and Best Speaker was taken up by TM Adnan. Professional Toastmasters club is proud of him.

The winner of the Table Topics was TM Haris and TM Neel was the runner-up. The winner of the Prepared Speeches was TM Maneckji and TM Avan was the runner-up.

TM Adnan was presented with a ribbon for his services to the Professional Toastmasters club.

TM Mehmood joined us after a very longtime. Our presiding officer asked him and TM Tahir for their comments.

Our next meeting is schedule to take place at Beach Luxury hotel on October 6th, 2011. Our meeting of October 13th, 2011 will take place at a new venue. Our member, TM Khalid has invited the Professional Toastmasters club to hold its meeting in his office on October 13th. The address is, "Plot No F-1 sector 6-A Mehran Town, Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi."
